Being a photographer for the past decade, one question I get asked pretty often is, “Is this your only job?” I think when people see you doing something that some classify as art, there is a subtle thought of, “Well, how often can you really be shooting?” As I think about how my answers have evolved, I am grateful for the direction that I couldn’t have planned for.
The Journey to Full-Time Media Production
I found myself able to lean on working a traditional 9-5 due to the majority of my shoots being on weekends. When I knew my goal was to produce media full-time, this narrative wasn’t helping me build on that vision. I knew I had the skills to produce high-quality content for individuals and businesses when I landed a role as media specialist for one of the premier construction companies in the Columbus area.
Realizing that there was a window of opportunity in serving the “9-5” crowd made me shine my light on business owners and nonprofits. These are people who have a consistent need to present not only their brands but their actions on a week-to-week basis. Part of building community is showing your audience one of two things: who you are or how you do what you do. This insight led to the perfect opportunity for service expansion.
Introducing the “Personal Media Package”
Initially, I thought of calling it the “Personal Photographer Package,” but I quickly realized that title didn’t fit because there was more to it than just offering a photo shoot. I wanted it to be a monthly retainer contract because of the goal to build brand understanding through consistent creation. Applying my knowledge with brand strategy and development that has served me thus far in a new way that helps serve my clients further made it a no-brainer.
Typically, when a decision is the best one, it is universally beneficial. This one felt that way because it not only gives me the opportunity to do this “full-time” but also takes away the mystery of what the coming months' bookings will look like. It keeps me busy, which is inevitably bettering my craft while providing local businesses with high-quality productions at a discounted retainer rate.
